The Alabama coast is dotted with many small islands all of which adds to the feel of a tropical destination. Among the largest of these islands is Ono Island, located on Old River just north of the Gulf Beach. The 5.5 mile barrier island is accessed via a private, guarded, bridge from Hwy 182. This island community is home to some of the area’s most exclusive properties. Back in the 1960’s before the island gained its refinements, the island was home to over 5,000 goats. It was here that the Kee brothers lived and sold goats for milk and meat. Ironically, the locals named the neighboring island Goat Island.
Ono Island got its name during negotiations between the state of Alabama and Florida over ownership of the island with each state saying “Oh, No!” when the other claimed ownership of the island. Today, the Island is an unincorporated area under the police and fire protection of Orange Beach. While the residences on the perimeter of the island are referred to as “big water’ there are canal front properties along with non-waterfront properties with access to a pool, fitness center and a boat launch.
